Robots are machines that can perform physical tasks with little or no outside help.
Robotics is simply just the study of robots. Fascinating, right?
We are faced with robotics and robots where ever we go, and half the time we have no idea that we are.
Robotics involves design, programming and testing of robots and automated systems. A very interesting topic to learn about, if you ask me.
Robots are generally designed for one purpose only, and that is programmed into that particular robot.
Sometimes this purpose or task is simple to follow or repetitive, but other times it requires some degree of "intelligence", so to speak.
Robots that have simple programming do repetitive tasks but learn nothing from the work or the operations that they do.
Robots that have very advanced programming and are "smart," are adaptive and oeprate under a program but can also learn as they carry out their task. These "smart" robots are used to investigate volcanoes, go and research under the sea and in space, for bomb disposal e.t.c.
Impossible Tasks;
Tasks just impossible for humans though e.g. very deep underwater, or deep into a volcano.
Dirty Tasks;
These could be tasks too dirty for anyone to work in e.g. unclogging and cleaning sewers and pipes.

The purpose of robots can be categorised in the following ways;
Repetitive Tasks;
These are tasks that are too boring for humans e.g. working on a conveyer belt.
Dangerous Tasks;
Tasks too dangerous for humans e.g. clearing land mines, rescue missions, cleaning toxic chemicals etc.
Robots are generally grouped into two main types;
Industrial Robots;
These are the most common type and are primarily used in manufacturing. They are pretty much nothing more than giant movable arms used for welding or gripping of objects.
Domestic Robots;
These robots are designed to be of use at home or for entertainment. They are way too expensive to buy, but are more of a novelty item. A very common domestic robot though is the automatic pool cleaner that are found in many pools today.
